Clifton Richard Carter “Sonny” passed peacefully away on June 30, 2023 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on November 20,1934, in Glasgow, Kentucky, a son of Lee and Eva (Emberton) Carter. He was 88 years old. He was married to Wanda Lee Mason on November 24, 1954, their marriage lasting 68 years until his death.
Sonny was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his family, hearing about the antics of his many grandchildren, side by side and ranger riding and tinkering in his garage. He also had a great love of animals and enjoyed rescuing horses, dogs, cats, and wildlife.
Sonny’s true passion was his work. He retired from two companies, Electric Steel, Indianapolis, and Rolls Royce, Indianapolis. He was also self-employed throughout his life. He never really retired and loved his work of building and remodeling homes and making deals up until just a few weeks prior to his death.
Survivors include his wife Wanda and three children, Connie (Rick) Ford, Stacey (Greg) Sutphin, Eric Carter; grandchildren, Josh Ford, Brent Ford, Justin Ford, Travis Sutphin, Dana Hubbell, Andrea Purdy, Erica Carter and Gage Carter; seventeen great grandchildren and twelve great-great grandchildren; his sisters, Ginny Daily and Helen Orzoti; and brother, James Brent Carter.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father and four brothers and a sister.
Funeral services are planned for 12:00 noon on Friday, July 7, 2023, at the Porter and Hunt Funeral Home, 315 West Main Street, in Jamestown, Indiana. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will follow services at the Jamestown I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
