The Rossville Hornets wrestling team claimed the championship spot in the Hoosier Heartland Conference with four champions and a runner-up during the event.
The Rossville Hornets took to the mats against teams from the Hoosier Heartland Conference, which hosts Carroll, Clinton Central, Clinton Prairie, Delphi, Eastern, North White, Rossville, Sheridan, Taylor and Tri-Central, to secure victory in the conference.
Donovan Storey secured the championship in the 113-weight class, Jacob Weaver secured the championship in the 150-weight class, Jacob Cole secured victory in the 165-weight class and Noah Weaver secured victory in the 190-weight class. Dylan Lynch placed second in his weight class, Peyton Moss, Kai McKinney, Jacob Moss and Colten Klecz placed third in their weight classes, Noah Stingley and Nathan Freeman placed fourth in their weight classes and Judah Philyaw placed sixth in his weight class.
The Rossville Athletic Department released a statement regarding the victory, stating that the coaches are “so incredibly proud of this group of young men. This group started out young and inexperienced with 11 out of 14 starters being Freshman or Sophomores.”
The conference victory is the first championship placement for the Hornets since 2002 and is the first “outright conference championship ever.” The Rossville Athletic Department stated that the next two years will showcase the growth and expertise that has been harnessed by the team.
“So proud of the wrestlers, managers, coaches and parents that make this program special,” the department released. “We aren’t done. Bring on Sectionals.”
The Rossville Hornets finished the dual season this year with a record of 16-14 heading into the Hoosier Heartland Conference where they secured victory.
