Robert (Bob) Burgun of Lebanon, Indiana, passed away peacefully in the company of his family on February 20th at Ascension St. Vincent Carmel Hospital.
Bob grew up in Florida tending bunnies, picking avocados and fishing with his dad. He attended Florida State University, where he studied graphic arts and eventually met his wife Mary Ann.
The couple enjoyed hiking, camping, and road-tripping. They planned to build a home in Tallahassee until Bob was unexpectedly offered a job on a joint venture between the U.S. Treasury and the Ministry of Labor in Saudi Arabia. The chance to travel was irresistible, and the couple spent the next six years working in Riyadh and traveling across the Middle East, East Asia, and Europe. Being part of an adventurous, tight-knit expatriate community resulted in many new friendships and treasured experiences in different countries and cultures.
The family returned to Atlanta, Georgia, to raise their two sons, Nathan and Evan. Bob was a committed and patient father, taking 50-mile canoe trips with Scouts and an Eric Clapton concert on graduation night equally in stride. He also earned his pilot’s license during this time and found a second home working in aerospace at Rolls-Royce. When the company expanded, Bob accepted an offer to move to Indianapolis, where he created 3-D models, display graphics, marketing materials, and presentations as part of the graphics team. He rarely missed the weekly trip to the pub with his Rolls-Royce friends.
After his retirement he took up golf (briefly) and indulged in his life-long hobbies of woodworking, fine cooking, and fishing. He also discovered a new fondness for combining a good meal and a good movie with a good nap. He honed his home maintenance and repair skills under the quiet supervision of his best feline buddy, Buzz. Watching “This Old House” for inspiration, he was a jack-of-all-trades and was willing to tackle any project especially if it meant helping a friend or neighbor. He was unfailing generous with his time and skills.
Bob leaves behind his wife of 48 years, his two sons, his sister, nieces and nephews, and many friends. A Celebration of Life will be planned for the spring, when the weather is good, and fish are biting. Myers Mortuary and Boone County Crematory have been entrusted with his cremation.
