Richard Lee “Rich” Day, 79, of Frankfort, was welcomed home by his Heavenly Father, Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at Wesley Manor. Rich was born January 3, 1947, in Frankfort to Hoy Curtis and Mary Helen (O’Bryan) Day. He married Donna Kay Pugh on September 17, 1977, and she survives.
Richard began high school at St. Meinrad in 1961, and graduated from Frankfort High School, in 1965. After high school, he became a Novitiate with the Marianist in New York. He then attended the University of Dayton. In 1968, he moved to Cleveland, Ohio and attended Kent State University. Rich served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War from 1969-1971 and spent much of that time in Ethiopia. When back he continued his education at Purdue University where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education. He spent the majority of his working career as an educator, teaching 5th grade and then 1st grade for South Side Elementary School and Blue Ridge Elementary before his retirement in 2010. He also spent some time working for JC Penney and the United Postal Service.
Rich had a passion for people and serving others. When he wasn’t teaching the youth of Frankfort, he was giving of his time and energy to helping others. He was one of the founders of Big Brothers and Big Sisters in Frankfort, served in the prison ministry programs in Plainfield and Frankfort, helping people earn their GED through the Learning Network, tutoring students, and mentoring men on jail release programs.
Rich was also a devoted man of faith and served his Lord God faithfully. He was a member for much of his life of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where he played the organ, directed the choirs, taught Sunday School and helped run the Youth Ministry Program. He was always looking to find deeper meaning and devotion in God’s word and would attend other churches to grow in his faith journey, including Frankfort Bible Holiness, Oakland Christian Church and most recently Community Christian Church. He truly lived by the rule that he taught his sons, “If God gave me the talent to use in the world, I also need to use the talent to serve and praise Him.”
Above all things, Richard was a man that loved deeply and unconditionally, especially his family. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Donna, and an active participant in his sons’ lives, through church activities, being a boy scout leader, and though often a man of few words, the biggest way he showed his love to his boys was simply showing up to their many concerts, plays, awards programs and other events. His love for his family grew as his family grew as daughters-in-law and grandchildren were added to the family and he took great pride in showing up for them as well. He was truly the epitome of what a Godly family man looked like to his family.
Along with his wife of nearly 49 years, Richard is survived by his sons, Patrick (Tashia) Day, Brian (Christina) Day and Joseph (Kelli) Day; siblings, Joyce (Dan) Houser, Margie (Mike) Roberts, and Paul (Kathy) Day; sister-in-law, Pam Day; grandchildren, Ruby and Sophie Day, Grant, Mason, Anthony and Parker Day, Connor and Keegan Day; step-grandchildren, Vander and Dane Lindvall; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Rich was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, James “Jim” Day and Robert “Bob” Day.

Julia “Judy” DeFord, cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, was welcomed into Heaven on June 22, 2026. Judy was born in Rossville, Indiana on April 14, 1937 to Robert Hackerd and Mary Faye Tansey. Judy attended Rossville schools, where she met her lifelong love Larry DeFord in elementary school. She stayed proud of her Rossville heritage, continuing to communicate and meet with her classmates from the class of 1955 until her death. Larry and Judy married on November 11, 1956. They moved to Michigantown, Indiana, where Judy worked as a secretary and was a housewife. She also spent many years working at the family business, The Sundae Parlor, in Michigantown.
Judy loved babies, children, and her family. She taught Bible School and Sunday School at Michigantown Christian Church and Normanda Christian Church. She and Larry helped with the first grade field trip for many years at Clinton Central Elementary School. Judy watched her grandchildren as well as Kreigh and JT Sloggett until they were school aged, and they and their parents John and Mary Phyl Sloggett became part of the family. She played in her bridge club monthly until her death and was a voracious reader until the end. She particularly loved reading books by David Baldacci, John Grisham, and Michael Connelly. She was also a lover of flowers– she and Larry spent many hours outside in the summers pulling weeds and watering plants in their beautiful flower beds.
Judy never let anyone’s birthday go uncelebrated. She dutifully kept a calendar that she updated every year that listed everyone’s birthday and age. She was an expert at sending cards and buying small gifts– she loved going to Hallmark and made stops at Tamarack in West Virginia for many years on their fall trip to Williamsburg. Birthday parties and holiday celebrations were held for years at their pool in the summer, at their outdoor fireplace in the fall, and at their kitchen table in the winter.
Judy also showed her love for friends and family through her generosity with food. She was a talented baker and cook and she never let anyone go hungry. Everything was made from scratch- even mashed potatoes. Her cherry, coconut cream, and pumpkin pies were particularly legendary. She also loved to make apple and pumpkin cakes in the fall. She always made fudge at Valentine’s Day, and grape salad in the summer if we were lucky.
Most importantly, Judy was a faithful and loving servant of Jesus Christ. We are heartbroken that she is no longer with us as the center of our family, but we take comfort knowing that she is reunited with Larry and is no longer in pain. We know that we will see her again someday.
Judy leaves behind her children, son Damon (wife Denise) of Michigantown, daughter Dawn Dunn (husband Lee Dunn) of Pittsboro, North Carolina, and daughter Heidi Randolph (husband Rick Randolph) of Michigantown. She is also survived by her siblings Janet Morton of Houston, Texas, Robert “Bobby” Hackerd of New Harmony, Utah, and Richard Hackerd of Rossville, Indiana and their families. She will be deeply missed by her grandchildren, Eric DeFord of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Nicole Pries (husband Kyle Pries) of Frankfort, Indiana, Greta Holmes (husband Cassius Holmes) of Jacksonville, Florida, Margo Requard (husband Jay Requard) of New York City, New York, and Ethan DeFord of Michigantown, along with special “grandsons” JT and Kreigh Sloggett and their families. She has three great-grandsons, Owen DeFord, Cassius Clay Holmes, and Benjamin Requard.
She was preceded in death by her parents and great-granddaughters Hazel and Lily DeFord.
Services will be private. Memorial donations in her honor may be made to Samaritan’s Purse to either the Operation Christmas Child or US Disaster Relief & Rebuild funds via their website https://www.samaritanspurse.org/.
