Elsie L. Fairfield

Elsie L. Fairfield, 81, passed away early Sunday morning, June 7, 2026, at her home in Thorntown, Indiana. She was born on March 29, 1945, a daughter of the late Alton T. Fields and Juanita (Eskridge) Fairfield.

On September 1, 1971, she married David G. Fairfield in Thorntown. Mr. Fairfield passed away in 1997.

Elsie worked in a variety of roles, including at a grocery store, sewing factory, tanning salon, and as an elementary school crossing guard.

She was a member of Trinity Chapel Baptist Church and a devoted homemaker who supported her children in all their activities. Known as the town grandma. In her free time, she enjoyed puzzle books, game shows, birdwatching, and caring for her flowers.

Survivors include her children, Julia Limerick of Colfax and Ellie (Barry) Rutherford of Thorntown; stepdaughter, Jodie Fairfield; grandchildren, John (Melissa) Nelson, Annie Girton, Tim Nelson, Jr., and Kayla Avila; twelve great grandchildren; two great-great grandchild; brother, Alton “Tom” Fields of Lebanon; sisters, Carlena Williams of Lebanon, Linda Frietzsche of Lebanon, Lois (Steve) Cole of Thorntown, and Rita Baton of Urbana, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Elsie was preceded in death by her stepson, Danny Fairfield; grandchildren, Alfred “Cricket” Cooper, Jr., Julie Cooper; brothers, John H. Washburn and James “Jim” Washburn; and sisters, LaDonna Doran and Marjorie Morton.

Funeral Services are planned for 12:00 noon on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at Myers & Hunt Mortuary, 116 W. Plum Street, in Thorntown, Indiana. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will follow services at Maple Lawn Cemetery in Thorntown.
