Richard “Dick” Shull Hankins, 81, passed away Saturday, September 12, 2026. He was born on June 30, 1945, in Akron, Ohio, a son of the late Pauline and Richard D. Hankins.
He graduated from Thorntown High School in 1963 and attended Purdue University. Richard worked in the steel industry for 48 years at Biddle’s Manufacturing in Sheridan, Indiana, before retiring in 2017.
Richard was an avid fisherman and made many trips to Cass Lake, Minnesota. He was a devoted Indiana University football fan, and in his final days, he enjoyed watching their title winning game each day. He was also a fan of the San Francisco 49ers, San Francisco Giants, and Indianapolis Colts. Richard had a special love for Little League baseball, enjoying the championships and having coached Little League in Thorntown for many years.
While Richard was growing up, he was a member of the Thorntown Methodist Church. In his adult years, he was the founding member of Grace Baptist Church in Lebanon.
On July 31, 2024, he married his forever sweetheart Charlotte (Kinslow) Hankins.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Charlotte Hankins of Thorntown; brother, Gregory Hankins of Cape Coral, Florida; children, Laurie (Pat) Potter of Thorntown, Richard (Sharon) Hankins of Kansas City, Missouri, Julie Martin of Thorntown, Jill (Mike) Brown of Thorntown, and Amanda Hankins of Thorntown; grandchildren, Melissa Cummins, Alicia Stock, Tiffany Stock, Josh Potter, Nathan Potter, Katie Potter, Rachel Shollar, Emily Needles, and Mason West; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild on the way.
Visitation is planned for Monday, September 21, 2026, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Myers & Hunt Mortuary, 116 West Plum Street, in Thorntown, Indiana. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. with additional visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Cremation will follow services.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chicken Nugget and Gang Animal Rescue Service (located in Boone County), as well as Gideons International who help distribute Bibles worldwide.
