We all know summertime can be hot in Indiana. This week we saw temperatures reaching 91.4 degrees at 3:15 PM at the Frankfort/Clinton County Regional Airport today. (Thursday June 26th).
The all-time high temperature record in Frankfort, Indiana is 108 Degrees Fahrenheit set on July 14, 1936. Indiana recorded its all-time record high on that very same day at 116 Degrees Fahrenheit in Collegeville, Jasper County on July 14, 1936.
It is probable the “Heat Index” or what the temperature actually feels to the human body on July 14, 1936, in Frankfort would have easily exceeded 110 or 115 Degrees. “Heat Index” readings are based on Temperature AND Humidity but the “Heat Index” reading was not in use or recorded in 1936.
In the summer of 1936, 11 consecutive days were above 100 degrees in Frankfort, Indiana. Although Air Conditioning was invented by Willis Carrier in 1902, it was not used by the general public much before the 1950’s or even later for many households, making that 108 degree day in 1936 a scorching one, indeed.
The last time the temperature in Frankfort topped 100 degrees was 13 years ago in 2012.
