James Ray Smith, 87, of Frankfort, Ind., passed away May 8, 2025 at IU Health Frankfort Hospital. He was born on April 3, 1938 in Mill Springs, Kentucky to George B. and Dorthy M. (Rigney) Smith. He married Patricia C. Wallace in 1965 and they later divorced.

James attended school in Frazer Kentucky and worked for Peets Feeds for over 20 years. He was an avid NASCAR and University of Kentucky basketball fan. He enjoyed singing with his cousins, Frank and Tom Harness, playing guitar, and yard sales. James loved riding through the country and listening to bluegrass music.

Surviving are his children, David (Tammy) Smith of Tennessee and Rosie Hodgen of Indianapolis, grandchildren, Megan, Alex, Abby, Andrew, Aiden, and Ashton, 3 great-grandchildren, and his siblings, Larry (Maxine) Smith, Roger Smith, Katy (Sam) Tarr, Janie Dean, and Jeff Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Kenny Alter, daughter, Loretta Smith, grandson, Kenny Jr., and siblings, Tommy Smith, Joyce Hackett, Paul Smith, and Brenda Bales.

A funeral service will be held at Noon on Monday, May 12, 2025 at Archer-Weston Funeral & Cremation Center, 501 East Clinton Street, Frankfort, with Pastor Shan Sheridan officiating. Friends may visit from 10 a.m. until the time of service at Noon on Monday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Green Lawn Memorial Park, Frankfort.
