The Boone County 4-H/Western Boone FFA Livestock Judging senior team has earned a spot on the national stage after placing 3rd in the Indiana State 4-H Livestock Judging Contest, qualifying them to compete at the prestigious American Royal National Livestock Judging Contest this October in Kansas City, Missouri. The members of the 3rd place team are Chris Hall, Maycee Reed, Kylee and Zoey Trent.
The senior team impressed judges with their skills in evaluating livestock, delivering oral reasons, and applying critical thinking — key elements of competitive livestock judging. Their success reflects a high level of dedication, preparation, and passion for agriculture.
The team is coached by a dedicated group of volunteers: Tyler Trent, Amanda Trent, Makayla Smith, and Todd Smith, whose combined expertise and leadership have played a crucial role in the team’s development and success. In addition, the Junior Team of Corbyn Wilt, Parker Miller, Eli Weakley, and Lane Merrill placed 5th at the state contest in their division and numerous students had success throughout the season. Additional members of the Boone County 4-H/Western Boone FFA Livestock Judging Teams include Emma Hosfield, Wyatt MacKinnon, Rylee Pelley, Maddy Rawlings, Max Rawlings, Beau Threlkeld and Lexi Wilt.
“We’re incredibly proud of this team and the effort they’ve put in all year long,” said Coach Tyler Trent. “Competing at the American Royal is a huge honor, and it’s a testament to how hard these students have worked.”
In preparation for the trip, multiple fundraising efforts will begin this summer to help cover travel and competition expenses. The community’s support will be vital in helping the team represent Boone County and Indiana on a national level. One fundraising method will be raffling off two market hogs. Raffle winner will receive a hog processed by This Old Farm. The Wilt Family has donated two hogs and the fees of processing will be donated by Indiana Pork. On August 24, 2025, there will be a dinner hosted at the Eagles, in conjunction with the raffle drawing and a silent auction. Each raffle ticket costs $30 or $50 for two. If you are interested in purchasing tickets, please reach out to one of the coaches or students listed above!
The American Royal is one of the nation’s premier livestock events, drawing top teams from across the country. Participating in this contest will provide the team with valuable experiences and opportunities in agriculture, leadership, and education.
