On Saturday, August 8, 2026, at approximately 10:22 pm, Indiana State Troopers assigned to the Indiana State Fair responded to a criminal incident that occurred at a food vendor booth near the Coliseum on the state fairgrounds property.
Troopers quickly arrived on scene and located a 20-year-old victim that had been injured by being slashed by a knife or other sharp object. Troopers immediately rendered first aid to the victim, who was then treated by on-site EMS and transferred to an Indianapolis hospital for further treatment of serious injuries.
The alleged suspect, identified as Steven T. Mimms, age 37, Indianapolis, Indiana fled the scene and exited the fairgrounds prior to the initial officers arriving on scene.
The initial investigation by Indiana State Police Detectives indicated that the altercation occurred between two employees who worked for a third-party food vendor at the fair.
Early this morning, Mimms was tracked to a residence in the 500 Block of North Beville Avenue in Indianapolis. The Indiana State Police SWAT Team assisted in locating Mimms, who was hiding in the attic of the residence. He was taken into custody shortly after 8:00 am this morning after initially resisting arrest.
Mimms was arrested on preliminary charges of Attempted Murder, Escape (from home detention), and Resisting Law Enforcement. He was transported to an Indianapolis area hospital for evaluation. He will soon be transported to the Marion County Justice Center to be held pending the filing of formal charges by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
The investigation remains ongoing.
