Janet Mae Freshour

Janet Mae Freshour, 90, passed away on Thursday evening, June 20, 2024, at Witham Memorial Hospital. She was born April 27, 1934 in Lebanon, Indiana, the first daughter of the late Frank and Anna (Taylor) Poynter.

Janet was married for 64 years to Robert Freshour, from Monticello, Indiana, whom she met on a blind date in Chicago. Robert passed away on March 3, 2017.

She grew up on a family dairy farm in Dover, Indiana. There were plenty of chores for she and her two sisters, expected of them to do.

Janet attended Lindbergh and Dover schools, graduating from Dover in 1952. She participated for nine years in 4-H, Rainbow for Girls, School Band, Church activities, and Ballroom dancing. She and her sisters took piano and marimba lessons. They became accomplished marimba players and were known as the “Poynter sisters,” playing throughout Central Indiana, and winning at the Indiana State Fair talent contest twice.

Janet graduated from Chicago’s Ray Vogue Art School in Fashion Merchandising in Chicago. She worked for Marshall Field and Co., L.S. Ayres & Co., Paul Harris Store in Lebanon, and receptionist for Dr. James McAfee. She retired after 20 years working for the Lebanon Reporter as an advertising sales rep. She loved her job, designing her clients’ ads. She won several Blue Ribbon Awards from the Hoosier State Press Association.

Janet and her husband enjoyed attending school and church activities of their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. After retirement she had the joy of taking care of her great grandchildren during the day.

She was a community-minded person actively involved in Central P.T.A., Psi Iota Xi Sorority since 1966, Charter member Merri Mixers Home Ec Club, Eastern Star, Central Christian Church, 50 years Lebanon Basketball season ticket holder, Korean War Veterans monthly luncheons with her husband and great grandson Kollin.

She and her husband enjoyed their Sweetwater Lake home with family and friends. They traveled throughout 49 states and Europe.

Janet is survived by daughter Pamela (Dennis) D’Amico of Lebanon; son Kirk Freshour of Lebanon; grandchildren Kelli (Kraig) Kincaid of Noblesville, Jason (Ashley) Behr of Dallas, TX; Dana (Jeff) Stevens of Wentzville, MO; and Denise (Jeremy) DeForge of Los Angeles, CA; great grandchildren Kollin Kincaid, Cannon Brunes, Kolton Kincaid, Memphis Freshour, Rhys and Rowan Behr, and Dax Stevens; sister Jane Swisher of Indianapolis; nieces Charlotte Frandsen of Lebanon and Susan Viehman of Indianapolis; nephews Mark Swisher of CO, Mike Swisher of FL, and Kenneth Acton of Lebanon; many great nieces, great nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by grandson Gregory Freshour; sister Jean Acton; brothers-in-law Harold Acton, Harold Swisher and Richard Freshour; and sisters-in-law Marie Martin and Linda Chappell.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 North Lebanon Street in Lebanon, Indiana. Following visitation, there will be a private family service.
