The Whitestown Metropolitan Police Department investigation into a reported “road rage” shooting occurring on Interstate 65 in Boone County remains ongoing as the victim remains in stable but critical condition.
On July 3 around 4:30 p.m., Whitestown Metropolitan Police Department officers reportedly responded to reports that a semi had left the road of Interstate 65 northbound at the 130.5-mile marker before coming to a rest on Perry Worth Road in front of Woodspring Suites.
Reports showed that a deputy from the Boone County Sheriff’s Office approached the scene and was notified by bystanders that the male driving the semi had been shot, and the deputy reportedly began emergency medical aid and life-saving measures immediately.
Witnesses reportedly informed the officers on the scene that the semi driver was the victim of a road rage incident where the suspect vehicle was “brake checking” multiple semis while traveling north on Interstate 65, which reportedly caused traffic disruptions. Police released a description of the suspect vehicle, stating that the car was a black sedan passenger car being driven by a female with a male in the passenger seat.
The driver of the semi was emergently transported to an Indianapolis trauma center by Whitestown Fire Department medics where his condition was reported to be stable but critical. Authorities stated that the identity of the semi driver will not be released immediately out of respect for the victim and his affected family members.
The incident is considered an ongoing criminal investigation into the drivers of the car that were involved in the incident, and further information will be released as the investigators develop the case.
“We appreciate the patience of the public, as this was a very chaotic incident that coincided with the busyness of holiday events, and lastly, we prioritized notification of the victim’s family due to his ever-changing condition,” the department released. “WMPD detectives are tirelessly investigating this incident following all leads until exhausted.”
