The Town of Mulberry has announced that the Town of Mulberry Water Department will begin its annual Hydrant Flushing Program next week from Monday, Sept. 23 through Friday, Sept. 27 between the hours of 7 p.m. and midnight every day.
During the hydrant flushing, residents may experience some discoloration as well as low water pressure. The discoloration may present as slightly yellow, orange or brown-colored water flowing from the faucet. In the event of discoloration, the Town stated that residents should run the cold water tap for a few minutes, and if the water is still discolored, wait 30 minutes and run the water again. The Town stated that the temporary discoloration does not pose a health or safety risk and only affects the appearance of the water.
The Town stated that while the water does not pose health risks, residents should avoid washing laundry during the scheduled flushing times as the flushed sediment may discolor white clothing. Residents are instructed to ensure that the water runs clear at the tap and wash dark clothes before washing light-colored clothing. Residents are also encouraged to avoid using hot water until the cold water runs clear.
“Flushing hydrants is an important preventative maintenance activity that verifies proper operation of the hydrant and ensures adequate water flow,” the Town released. “Flushing also removes sediment that naturally accumulates in water lines. Removing these materials through flushing maintains properly working systems.”
Residents who experience discoloration for a prolonged period of time or experience a significant loss of water pressure after hydrant flushing occurs are instructed to call the Water Department at 765-296-2455 at extension 3.
