The Carroll Cougars outlasted the Clinton Central Bulldogs in the Hoosierland TV girls basketball Game of the Week on Friday.
The Cougars were victorious 40-34. Mady Isley led the way with 16 points.
The Bulldogs struggled to find a rhythm offensively in the first half, trailing 21-10 at the halftime break. Junior Carly Davison was held to six points in the first half thanks to a stifling defense from the Cougars, led by junior Oliva Schroder.
Schroder matched up against Davison for nearly the entire game and made every shot difficult for the Bulldogs leading scorer.
Davison was able to find her shot in the second half, ending the game with 26.
“You have to give (Carly Davison) a lot of credit,” Carroll coach Brady Wiles said. “She had all the attention, probably three girls on her at different times, and still found a way to score 26 points. But anyone watching the game saw that it was a very difficult 26 points, and ultimately that was the difference in the game.”
Davison was able to will the Bulldogs back into the game in the fourth quarter, turning a 10-point deficit into just four at multiple points. But the Cougars hit key shots down the stretch, many hit by freshman Mady Isley.
“To call it like it is, Mady won the game for us last night,” Wiles said. “As far as on the offensive end, the ball ended up in her hands, she hit free throws, and she did it all for us last night. We’re excited about the freshman group.”
Isley was named The Farmers Bank Player of the Game for her performance.
The Cougars improved to 5-1 with the win and will have the holiday week off before taking the floor against Northwestern on Dec. 3.
The Bulldogs fall to 5-2 and will be back in action tomorrow against another conference foe in Delphi.
