Carroll Consolidated School Corporation recently implemented “share tables” in the cafeterias of the schools in an attempt to cut down on waste during lunch services while providing an additional opportunity to help others.
The corporation stated that the “share tables” have been designed as designated stations for sharing items that would otherwise be thrown away, but the corporation added limitations to ensure that only foods suitable for sharing are placed in the area.
The corporation identified shareable items as unopened items, such as cheese, milk, goldfish crackers, raisin boxes, tortilla chips, cereal bowls and muffins as well as whole fresh fruit and other items similar to those listed.
The corporation requested that students do not place items brought from home on the tables, and shared food will be monitored closely for contamination, such as being opened or partially consumed, as well as making certain that the original packaging is still intact.
Items that are leftover at the end of the lunch service will be utilized within the district first if possible. Items that are not utilized within the district will be distributed to local food pantries.
The corporation specified that items on the tables are not for adult consumption and should be saved for the students.
