The Clinton County Autism Support Group’s Walk-A-Mile for Autism kicks off this Saturday with
another exciting event to follow in May.
Gena Carson, Walk-A-Mile organizer, stated that the Clinton County Autism Support Group is celebrating a busy schedule of events over the next month in support of Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month in April, and a new event is upcoming in May to further the outreach.
“April is a busy month for the Autism Community,” Carson released. “Most importantly, April is National Autism Acceptance Month. In the month of April, we strive to educate the community on finding acceptance in the differences of someone with Autism. The Clinton County Support Group has several activities going on in the month of April to help promote acceptance, awareness, education and how you can get involved.”
The Walk-A-Mile for Autism will kick off on Saturday, April 13 at 3 p.m. at the TPA Park Shelter #1 where community members will be welcome to walk-a-mile for those affected by autism. The event will provide free t-shirts and bottles of water alongside events such as Frankfort Mayor Judy Sheets reading a proclamation for Autism Acceptance Month. The event is brought to the community by The Arc of Clinton County, The Carson Family, Connecting Point Church, Jeff and Tammy Danner, Tracy Davis Insurance, Doin’ it Wells Services, L N Green Irrigation LLC, Tornado Roofing and Remodeling Inc., Vaquero Y Mas Western Wear and WeCare Recovery Home.
The Autism Support Group will then be visitng the WILO Points of Light Volunteer Fair at 51 West Event Center in Frnakfort on Tuesday, April 23 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. to further connect with the community.
Carson announced on WILO’s Party Line on Thursday that the Clinton County Autism Support Group will be hosting a new event, known as a social circle, for individuals with disabilities and their caregivers and family members.
“What is a social circle?” Carson wrote. “It is an opportunity for your loved one to enjoy activities out in the community while building life-long relationships with their peers.”
The first social circle event is scheduled for Wednesday, May 15 at noon at TPA Park at the Main Shelter. Participants are asked to bring their own sack lunch to eat while they get acquainted and talk about the different activities they would want to participate in with the social circle in the future, such as visiting the Frankfort Lagoons, Camp Cullom, Nature Trails in Lafayette, Aviators or Indians games, Children’s Museum or just playing Wii dancing and other games or bowling.
Community members are also asked not to drop off a loved one for the event and leave as the event is curated for individuals with disabilities alongside their caregiver or loved one.
Carson stressed that while the events are being hosted by the Clinton County Autism Support Group, all events are open to all individuals with disabilities and their caregivers or loved ones.
