For the fourth straight year, the Carroll Cougars brought home the Bacon Bowl skillet after taking down rival Delphi 21-17.
The Cougars started their skillet defense by recovering an onside kick to begin the game, but couldn’t do anything with the ball after the sudden change.
Both defenses looked strong to start the game and the first quarter ended in a stalemate. The Carroll’s special team unit struck again at the beginning of the second quarter. They blocked a punt and recovered inside the Delphi five-yard line. Two plays later, Aiden Wiles marched in for the touchdown giving Carroll the lead.
Delphi put together a drive of their own midway through the second quarter and quarterback Kaydn McAtee snuck it in from the one. The Oracles hit the extra point to go up 7-6 with six minutes to go in the first half.
Carroll took the lead back just a few plays later after a big run set up Aiden Wiles to find the endzone for his second score.
Before the end of the half, Kaydn McAtee connected with Logan Smith for a score to put the Oracles up 13-12 at the break.
After a long drive to start the third quarter stalled in the rezone, the Cougars turned it over on downs. The Oracles gave it back seconds later on a fumble, setting up another short field for Carroll and another Aiden Wiles touchdown.
Later in the third, the Cougars marched it down to the five, and Aiden Wiles found a hole for his fourth rushing score of the day making the score 24-13.
The Delphi offense struggled to get going for much of the second half. They handed the ball back to Carroll early in the 4th quarter and the Cougars put together a long drive to drain the clock. With less than two minutes to go, the Cougars turned it over on a fumble.
The Oracles went the length of the field on a quick scoring drive and Kaydn McAtee found Brett Huffman for a 25-yard score. Delphi, however, couldn’t recover the onside kick and Carroll kneeled it out to win 24-21.
Cougar running back Aiden Wiles finished with over 150 rushing yards and scored all 24 points for the Cougars.
Carroll improves to 4-0, 2-0 in conference play, and takes on Eastern next week.
Delphi falls to 2-2, 1-1 in conference play, and plays at Tri-Central.
