
On June 26, 1954, he was united in marriage to Beverly Jo (Spears) Newhart in Jamestown. They shared 69 wonderful years together before her passing on July 26, 2023.
Elton “Bud” was a 1949 graduate of Jackson Township High School. Following graduation, he began his career with enlistment into the United States Navy on June 3, 1949. He served his country on the U.S.S. Conserver ARS-39 during the Korean War and was discharged honorably from service in 1953.
Shortly after leaving the Navy, he was accepted by the U.S. Department of Defense as a police officer at Ft. Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis where he remained until 1959. After leaving the police department, he accepted a position with the Post Engineers and continued that job until 1969.
In November of 1969, he became a firefighter for the United States Army Fire Department. He retired on November 9, 1989 with the rank of Assistant Chief and acting District II Chief. His retirement ended his 40 years of Federal service.
In addition, Bud enjoyed working as a part-time farmer. He and his mother milked dairy cattle for several years, followed by raising crops and a small herd of beef cattle. Furthermore, Bud hauled grain for 26 years for Chris Schooler.
He was a member of Old Union Church since his childhood. He proudly served as a member of the American Legion for 73 years. In addition, Bud was a member of the Edsel Motor Club and of the Mid Hoosier A’s (a division of Ford Model A Restorer’s Club) which included traveling with his wife, Beverly, and good friends, Marvin and Dottie Bartlett. Bud was an avid Motor Speedway racing fan and enjoyed collecting antique memorabilia, restoring antique cars, playing cards, and listening to music. Bud enjoyed being around people, talking with them, and sharing stories. He will be deeply missed by family, friends, and anyone who ever met him.
Survivors include two daughters, Jodi Charlton of Jamestown and Julie (Brian) Walker of Lafayette; six grandchildren, Seth (Deanna) Charlton, Gabriel Charlton, Ethan Charlton, Samuel (Betsy) Walker, Grace (Scott) Sexton, and Olivia Walker; nine great grandchildren, Elijah Sexton, Walker Sexton, Silas Sexton, Maximus “Max” Charlton, Augustus “Gus” Charlton, Melody Charlton, Riley Walker, Chase Walker, and Jaxson Walker
In addition to his parents and his wife, Bud was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Noelle Marie Charlton in infancy, and a son-in-law, Ed Charlton.
Funeral Services with Military Rites are planned for 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 20, 2025, at Old Union Church, 5681 South 500 West, Jamestown, Indiana. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Interment will follow at Old Union Cemetery. Porter and Hunt Funeral Home in Jamestown has been entrusted with his care.
