Gene Wethington

Floyd Eugene “Gene” Wethington, 85, passed away peacefully Monday, May 6, 2024. He was born August 5, 1938, in Lebanon, Indiana, a son of the late Alfred “Guy” Wethington and Mary Louvenia Wethington. On April 29, 1961, he married Sonya Louise Beck and together they raised their four daughters in Lebanon. She preceded him in death.

Gene enlisted in the United States Army in 1955. He continued his military service with the Army National Guard for a combined 31 years of service. He retired as Staff Sergeant E-6 from the Army National Guard in 1998. Outside of his military career, he worked for Alton Box Company, Boone County Highway Department, F&L Sales & Service, and Asplundh Brush Control.

He was a longtime member of the American Legion Post 113 and Lebanon Eagles #2062 where he held several offices, and he was a former member of the Lebanon Elks Lodge #635. Gene most enjoyed being with family and friends, which almost always included Euchre and Poker games, watching sports or backyard cookouts. He loved planting his vegetable garden each year, enjoyed trips to the casino, woodworking and was an avid Colts fan.

Survivors include his daughters, Jacque (John) Heidenreich of Henderson, NV, Dana Byrkett of Seymour, IN, Jennifer (Jay) Fields of Zionsville, IN, and Janeen (Steve) Rex of Lebanon, IN; grandchildren, Ashley (Alex) Weaver of Nebraska, Brad (Ashley) Heidenreich of Nevada, Brooke Byrkett of Seymour, Eric (Kate) Byrkett of Seymour, Jesse Bethards of Zionsville, Justin (Krista) Rex of Crawfordsville, Andrew (Emily) Rex of Lebanon, Peyton Rex (fiancée, Karrie) of Lebanon, and Erica Rex of Lebanon; eleven great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Rick Byrkett; sister, Jessie Reger; and brother, Stanley Wethington.

A Funeral Mass with military rites are planned for 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 13, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 319 East South Street, in Lebanon, Indiana. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon. Myers Mortuary in Lebanon has been entrusted with his arrangements.
