Indiana Department Of Environmental Management Issues Reminder Regarding Open Burning

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management released guidelines for community members to follow after the holiday season regarding burning items.

The department issued a reminder for Hoosiers to follow Indiana’s open burning rules and regulations to safely recycle or dispose of their holiday decor. In general, burning trash, including ugly sweaters, tinsel, fruitcake and other unwanted items, is prohibited under the state’s open burning rule.

Local governments may have additional restrictions, and many local communities offer free Christmas tree pickup and recycling to keep the holiday spirit alive.
