Since Scott Shoemaker took over as police chief, the Frankfort Police Department had never had a K9 retirement.

That is until last Thursday afternoon when the department officially retired K9 Bane after six highly successful seasons on the force.

“Our program just started up six, seven years ago with Otto and then Bane,” said Shoemaker. “This is our second time really (that we’ve retired a K9) since our program restarted.”

Bane, who is Dutch Shepherd dog, was handled by Patrol Officer Beau Smith. The two began their journey on May 24, 2017 and officially ended August 3 with Bane’s last day and retirement. Together, they recorded 95 arrests.

“Bane has been in that police car as much as Beau has,” said Shoemaker. “He’s been riding in that car and he’s been a part of our department. So, it’s kind of bittersweet. Dogs don’t live as long as humans do. Now, Bane gets to relax at home playing with the new K9.”

Smith said this day was bittersweet for him as well.

“I knew this day would come at some point,” said Smith. “He’s got more tread on the tires, but he’s definitely happy to be home.”

Smith said Bane is going on seven years old.

“He’s got a bunch of spunk still,” said Smith. “He’s like a puppy at home.”

Smith is going to keep Bane with him and the family. He added that his daughter and Bane are really tight.

Shoemaker added the announcement of the new dog could come this week. He added the new dog will be with Smith just like Bane was.
