Lois Houghton

Lois Leila (Neville) Houghton, age 84, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2024, in Carmel, Indiana. Lois was born in Jackson, Michigan on May 1, 1940, and moved to Indianapolis when she was a child. She attended Broad Ripple High School where she met, and later married, the love of her life, William M. Houghton. Bill and Lois moved to Carmel, Indiana in 1960, where they raised their family.

Lois enjoyed hobbies including bowling, gardening, and sewing, and she delighted in all kinds of crafting. She spent countless hours knitting and crocheting and opened The Knit Shop on Main Street in Carmel in the mid-sixties, where she shared her skill and love for the craft by teaching classes. Lois had a profound love for the written word. She enjoyed reading, writing poetry, and prided herself in faithfully completing the Sunday crossword, in ink, every week. She was a typesetter and editor for The Wordshop in Westfield, Indiana from 1975 to 1986. She went on to work for Micro Simplified, editing training manuals and edited several novels for her uncle and author, Larry Nixon. She later worked as Office Manager for Kelly Services in Indianapolis until she retired in November of 2006. In their retirement, Bill and Lois moved to Sebastian, Florida, where Lois developed her passion for quilting and became a master quilter. She joined the quilt guild in Sebastian, Florida and spent much of her time making beautiful quilts for her loved ones that have now become family heirlooms.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Donald O. (Gerry) Neville and Martha L. (Tony) Fosso, her brother James D. Neville, sister-in-law, Janet (Reed) Neville and sister-in-law, Beverly L. (Houghton) Casper.

Lois is survived by her loving husband, William M. Houghton, and their “magnificent seven” children: William R. (Kathy) Houghton, Vicki L. (Tom) Beaver, Debbie L. (Scott) Dutchess, Richard F. (Amy) Houghton, Lois A. (Jeff) Delello, Joni K. Houghton, and James R. (Jodi) Houghton, and several nieces and nephews. She was a proud grandmother to 18 grandchildren and their spouses, 37 great-grandchildren (and counting), leaving behind a legacy of love. Her memory will be cherished by all who knew her, as she touched the lives of many with her sense of humor and creativity.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM Friday, October 11, 2024, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 N.
