New Law Requires Hoosiers to Update Vehicle Color on Registration Starting Jan. 1

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) is reminding residents that a new law goes into effect on January 1, 2026, requiring vehicle owners to update their registration whenever the exterior color of their vehicle is changed.

Senate Enrolled Act 331, signed into law earlier this year by Governor Eric J. Braun, amends Indiana Code 9-18.1-3. Vehicle owners must notify the BMV if their passenger vehicle undergoes any of the following changes:

Application of paint
Installation of a partial or full vinyl vehicle wrap
Removal of a partial or full vinyl vehicle wrap
Failure to report a color change within 30 days may result in a warning from law enforcement. Additionally, if a vehicle’s color was altered after it was used in a crime and the change was not reported, the owner could face a Class C misdemeanor charge.

Vehicle owners can update their registration color at a BMV branch, through a BMV Connect kiosk if their registration is up for renewal, or online via their myBMV account.
