NWS Issues Urgent Winter Storm Warning For Region From 1 p.m. Today To 7 p.m. Tomorrow

The National Weather Service has issued an urgent winter storm warning for today, Jan. 5 into tomorrow, Monday, Jan. 6 regarding high chances of an impactful winter storm entering the area.

The weather message was issued this morning at 4:31 a.m. for Carroll, Clinton, Warren, Tippecanoe, Howard, Fountain and Tipton counties. The winter storm warning will be in effect from 1 p.m. this afternoon to 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 6.

The service states that heavy snow is expected in the region with total snow accumulations between three and seven inches as wind gusts are expected to reach as high as 35 miles-per-hour.

The impacts are expected to have roads, especially bridges and overpasses, become slick and hazardous during the storm. The strong winds and weight of snow on tree limbs may down power lines and could cause sporadic power outages. Travel may become very difficult and will likely impact Monday’s morning and evening commutes.

The service recommends that those who must travel to keep an extra flashlight, first aid kit, food and water in their vehicle in case of an emergency.

The latest road conditions for the state may be obtained by calling 5-1-1.

The service states that persons should consider delaying all travel, and if travel is necessary, drive with extreme caution. Drivers are instructed to take a winter storm kit along with them, including items such as tire chains, booster cables, flashlight, shovel, blankets and extra clothing in case of being stranded.

The warning has been issued for Central Indiana, including Boone County from 10 a.m. today through 7 p.m. tomorrow with possibilities of up to 8 inches of snow accumulated.
