Peggy Buchanan

Mary Margaret (Peggy) Bentley Buchanan, 80, passed away October 14, 2022 at St Vincent’s Hospital. Peggy was born on November 30, 1941 in Clinton, Indiana. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1959 and from Indiana University in 1963 with a Bachelor’s Degree. At Indiana University, she was president of her sorority, Delta Delta Delta, and she served on the Student Union Board. In 1980, she earned her Master’s Degree in School Library Media from Purdue University.

Peggy began her teaching career at Perry Worth Elementary where she taught 5th grade. She then became the Director of Nutrition Education Project for Lebanon Community Schools and co-authored a Nutrition Education Guide for Indiana schools. Once Peggy obtained her Master’s Degree, she became the Director of Curriculum and Staff Development for Zionsville Community Schools. She developed their Gifted and Talented Program. She helped write and implement numerous grants from the National Science Foundation and Dekko Foundation. Peggy was invited to speak many times all around the country regarding her work and expertise. She retired in 2007.

Peggy was active in both the Lebanon and Zionsville communities. She was a member of the Zionsville Presbyterian Church and a Boone County Master Gardener. She was a member of Ulen Country Club, Tri Kappa, Magazine Club, First Tuesday and multiple book clubs and bridge groups. Peggy was a superb hostess, a fantastic cook and a friend to almost everyone she met. She was beloved by her family and friends and a consummate social butterfly. She was adored by her great-grandchildren and great-niece and she was always their first choice as the reader of stories.

Peggy was married to James Price Buchanan in 1964 and widowed in 2017. They had three sons, John Bentley Buchanan, James Warren Buchanan and Christopher George Buchanan. Peggy is survived by her grandchildren, Thomas Christopher Buchanan, Sarah Elizabeth Buchanan and Lindsey Bruggenschmidt, her daughter-in-law, Pamela Buchanan, her great-granddaughters, Nora, Hazel, Reese and Zoe Bruggenschmidt, her niece, Laura (Jackson) Graham and her great-niece, Alexa James Graham. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Miller Bentley and Francis Kalleward Bentley, her husband, her sons Christopher and John, and her sister, Sue (Bentley) Jackson.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Ulen Country Club on December 3, 2022 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lebanon Educational Foundation, 1005 Hendricks Dr., Lebanon, IN 46052 and the Zionsville Education Foundation, 900 Mulberry St., Zionsville, IN 46077.

Cremation arrangement have been entrusted to Myers Mortuary and Boone County Crematory.
