Phone Scam: “I am calling from Duke Energy. Pay or we will disconnect you in twenty minutes”

Kaspar Media was called today with a stern sounding male voice promising to “Cut your electricity off if you don’t pay your Duke Energy bill”.   There are three problems with that.  First, we pay our bills on time.  Second, we don’t even use Duke Energy!  Third, this is NOT the way utility companies serve notice.

Don’t fall for this scam.

Kaspar Media made a report to the Frankfort Police department and want our readers to be aware of this scam.  The voice on the other end will want you to call an 800 number and give your credit card number “so we won’t have to disconnect you in 20 minutes.”

In Indiana, a disconnect notice must be sent several days in advance and service can only be disconnected on a business day between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM local time.  This advance notice will give you time to contact the utility company directly upon receiving a notice to discuss payment arrangement and disconnections will not happen on evenings and weekends.

Don’t fall for the “hurry and pay” scam.  You’ll be throwing your money away and you’ll open up a can of worms.

The area is receiving some scam phone calls demanding payment for “past due electric bill or we will disconnect you in 20 minutes”
