Rossville Consolidated School District Superintendent Dr. Jim Hanna recently appeared on the nationally broadcast SiriusXM program On the Move with Dan Ronan to discuss how technology has transformed school transportation in the rural Indiana district.
The program airs on SiriusXM’s Road Dog Trucking, Channel 146, and features transportation news and conversations about legislation, regulations and innovations affecting professional drivers and fleet operators. Host Dan Ronan is an award-winning journalist and transportation expert whose career has included work with CNN and CBS News.
During the interview, Hanna explained how Rossville Schools uses telematics to monitor its school bus fleet, improve operational efficiency and respond more quickly during emergencies. Although Rossville operates a small fleet, the district has embraced technology commonly associated with much larger transportation systems.
“Technology gives us the ability to know where our buses are, support our drivers and respond quickly when our students need assistance,” Hanna said. “For a school district, that information is not simply about efficiency. It is about safety, communication and making informed decisions where every minute counts.
Rossville’s buses are equipped with Zonar GPS and telematics technology, providing district personnel with real-time information about vehicle locations, movements and route activity. The system also allows the district to review previous trips, monitor vehicles through geofencing and provide drivers with assistance when unexpected situations arise.
In one critical incident, the technology helped district officials pinpoint the location of a bus with a student experiencing a medical emergency and coordinate a rapid response. In another situation, administrators used real-time information to assist a substitute driver who had taken a wrong turn while arranging continued service for students.
During the national interview, Hanna highlighted Zonar’s role in helping Rossville improve the safety, efficiency and accountability of its transportation program. Zonar has also featured Rossville’s work in a national customer case study and transportation safety materials.
Hanna’s appearance reflected growing national interest in how smaller school districts can use telematics to save time, control costs, strengthen accountability and improve emergency preparedness. Rossville’s approach demonstrated that advanced fleet technology can provide significant benefits regardless of district size.
Hanna serves as both superintendent and transportation director for Rossville Consolidated School District. He was also named the 2026 District III Superintendent of the Year by the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents.
