Stephen Glover, President of Glover’s Ice Cream, is retiring after leading the company since 1991.
Glover’s Ice Cream was started in 1925 by Foster Glover, Steve’s Grandfather. Steve’s father, Bob Glover took over in 1971 upon Foster’s death. Bob’s son Stephen stepped in as President in 1991 upon Bob’s retirement. Stephen’s wife Kathy worked many years in production and Stephen and Kathy’s two sons Keith and Brett worked many summers at the factory located at 705 W. Clinton Street in Frankfort.
Now Glover’s Ice Cream, after three generations, will fall into local hands. Bryan and Shelly Helm will take over the ownership of this unique business.
In 1925 there were five ice cream companies in Frankfort. Now Glover’s is the last independent ice cream company in the State of Indiana.
Glover’s features up to 40 flavors including French Vanilla, Vanilla, Orange Sherbet, Chocolate Chip, Black Walnut, Strawberry Cheesecake, Orange Pineapple, Chocolate, Cookies ‘N Cream, Butter Pecan, Strawberry, Peppermint, Mint Chocolate Chip, Coffee, Cookie Dough, Chocolate Almond, Lemon and Peach.
In the beginning there were only six flavors. Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, Raspberry, Raspberry Ripple, and Pineapple.
Steve addressed family and friends at his retirement party at Arborwood Friday evening March 6 and recalled some interesting facts and stories about Glover’s 95 year history. Growing up in a family that owned an Ice Cream factory, Steve Glover and the Glover family could never take a real summer vacation but instead visited festivals all over the State and got to see a lot that way. Visiting festivals selling Ice Cream was summer vacation for the Glovers.
Glover’s Ice Cream can be found in stores, restaurants and institutions in a 100 mile radius of Frankfort.
The movie “Blue Chips” was released in 1994. During the production of the movie, Glover’s came up with “Blue Chip” Ice Cream to commemorate the filming of the Movie “Blue Chips”. That gained Glover’s Nationwide notoriety and business, resulting in interviews and interest from the national press.
Glover’s will remain in local hands. Bryan Helm and his wife Shelly will continue to expand the Glover Enterprise. Bryan is also CFO at NHK in Frankfort. Craig DiCarlo will serve as plant manager. Glover’s will keep the current employees now working at the facility.
