The Sugar Creek Historical Society is inviting lovers of history, ice cream and baked goods to its 15th annual Ice Cream Social August 2. This freewill donation event at the Thorntown Heritage Museum is the Society’s biggest and only annual fundraiser. All donations made at this event will be used for the ongoing barn project and toward the Society’s mission to preserve historic artifacts, display and interpret local history, and educate residents and visitors about Thorntown/Sugar Creek history.
The Museum is reigniting its fundraising mission for the Gillan barn built in the early 1900s. This spring the Society learned of significant damage in the barn’s foundation. Just last fall, the Society received a grant from the Community Foundation of Boone County to make safety repairs to sidewalks and the stairways. That project was started, but has been put on hold while the foundation is addressed. The Society needs $38,000 in order to repair the foundation and open the barn with new exhibits and programming space.
The Ice Cream Social will be on the museum’s back lawn on August 2 from 6-8:30. There will be ice cream and fresh baked goods donated by community members to enjoy while listening to Thorntown Bluegrass Jammers starting at 6:30. Lawn games will also be available so the whole family can come and enjoy themselves. The museum will be open for tours.
