It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Vernon L. “Cotton” Burdine, 86, of Jamestown, Indiana, on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at Homewood Health Campus in Lebanon. He was born on September 11, 1938, in Mount Vernon, Kentucky. He was the eldest son of the late Everett Lee and Lucy Isabelle (Renner) Burdine.
On July 28, 1956, he was united in marriage to Flonnie Mae McKinney, who survives.
Cotton lived and worked on a farm in Kentucky with his parents and attended Shopville High School, where he played basketball and boxed.
After moving to Indiana, he mastered several crafts including culinary and construction. Cotton was the manager of the catering department at Howard Johnson’s in downtown Indianapolis. He worked in several restaurants and was a great cook. He also worked for the Beam family where he learned to build homes. Cotton was an independent contractor and co-owner of G&C Construction. He worked for L. S. Ayres and traveled the state remodeling their stores. After he retired, he worked at Purdy Farms of Jamestown. Cotton was a very hard worker and usually worked several jobs at a time.
He enjoyed being with people, talking, joking, and loving on everyone. Cotton helped everyone he could. He was loved by all and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife at Homewood Health Campus; two children, Gary (Ann) Burdine of Jamestown and Vickie (Jeff) Foster of Lebanon; brother, Bill (Joyce) Burdine of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Sara (Andrew) Vaughn of Crawfordsville, Stefanie (Josh) Ross of Pittsboro, Tory (Liz) Foster of Black Hawk, Colorado, Jesse (Kyle) Burdine of Pittsboro, Cody (girlfriend, Amber) Burdine of Jamestown, Eden (Drew) Brokamp of Brownsburg, and Robin (boyfriend, Brian) Taft of Ellettsville; and great grandchildren, Jaden, Cadence and Kyrin Ross, Brooklyn and Dawson Vaughn, Braylen and Henley Taft.
In addition to his parents, Cotton was preceded in death by his siblings, Roberta Cook, Lorretta Truax, and J.E. Burdine.
He was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy, where in past years he held many jobs.
Funeral Services are planned for 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 24, 2025, at Church of God of Prophecy, 8 West Elm Street, in Jamestown. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will follow at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Jamestown. Porter and Hunt Funeral Home in Jamestown has been entrusted with his arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Church of God of Prophecy Jamestown, Boone County Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
