At 1:12 a.m. Friday, Indiana State Police Dispatchers began receiving 911 calls reporting a wrong way driver on I-70 near downtown Indianapolis. The driver was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-70 near the 85 mile marker. While dispatchers were on the phone with one witness, the wrong way driver struck another vehicle head-on. The Indianapolis Fire Department, along with state troopers responded to the scene. The driver of the wrong way vehicle, a 2016 Ford Mustang, was not injured. Three people in the other vehicle, a 2016 Jeep, were transported to a local hospital.
Investigators believe the Ford Mustang, driven by 40 year old Latasha Williams of Indianapolis, entered I-70 going the wrong direction from downtown Indianapolis and traveled eastbound in the westbound lanes before colliding with the Jeep. During the on scene investigation, Trooper Stout became suspicious that Williams was intoxicated. Stout administered field sobriety tests at the scene. After the field sobriety tests, Williams was transported to a local hospital for a certified blood test. The results of that test are pending however Trooper Stout was able to develop probable cause and Williams was arrested, she was transported to the Marion County Jail and incarcerated. She faces the preliminary charges of:
- Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Causing Serious Bodily Injury
- Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated with a BAC of .08 or more Causing Serious Bodily Injury
- Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Endangerment
- Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated with a BAC above .15
This crash closed two westbound lanes of I-70 for approximately two hours. Two adults and one juvenile from the Jeep were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
