The Zionsville Fire Department recently hosted its 25th Annual Firefighter’s Ball and Awards Banquet on Feb. 22 that saw multiple firefighters receive esteemed awards for their dedication to the department in 2024.
The night was spent honoring the firefighters for their bravery and dedicated service to the Zionsville community while also recognizing the sacrifices they make and the risks they take to keep people safe. Nearly 200 people attended the event this year.
Fire Chief James VanGorder recapped 2024 and shared his vision and goals for 2025, concluding his speech with a sentiment of gratitude for the firefighters in attendance.
“How extremely grateful I am for the incredible team of firefighters and administrative staff we have,” VanGorder said. “I appreciate every one of you. You are the talented group that selflessly delivers live saving services to our community every day 24/7/365.”
The celebration culminated in the recognition of numerous firefighters for the “of the year” awards for 2024, which were nominated by peers for always going above and beyond, demonstrating compassion and humbleness and displaying an eagerness to learn.
2024 Awards:
- Probationary Firefighter of the Year: Andrew Schulten
- EMT of the Year: Luke Skudrzik
- Paramedic of the Year: Jeremy Anker
- Cody Richardson Memorial Firefighter of the Year: Lt. Ben Box
- Civilian Lifesaving Award: Cash Coyner
- The lifesaving award was presented to Coyner for her acts when realizing that something was wrong with one of his friends, correctly deducing that the issue was more severe than just a nosebleed. The department also recognized Captain Elliot Russell for his 30 years of dedicated service to the Zionsville Fire Department and the Zionsville Community.
