Heavy Early Morning Travel Expected at Indianapolis Airport for Spring Break 2026

Travelers flying out of Indianapolis International Airport (IND) should prepare for significantly increased passenger traffic during the Spring Break travel period from March 25 through April 13, 2026, airport officials announced Wednesday.

Passengers are strongly encouraged to arrive at least two hours prior to their scheduled boarding time, particularly during early morning hours when the heaviest traffic is expected.

Airport officials released a Spring Break briefing highlighting key travel trends, anticipated passenger volumes, and important reminders to help travelers navigate the busy season. Among the main points are peak travel dates, parking considerations, and updates regarding identification requirements such as REAL ID and TSA’s Confirmed ID program.

TSA Operations and Wait Times

According to officials, TSA checkpoint wait times at IND have seen a slight increase, largely due to higher passenger volumes typical of spring break travel. However, these delays are not due to the partial government shutdown.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has reported some staffing call-offs nationwide, but impacts at Indianapolis remain relatively low. Local call-off rates are averaging between 4% and 8%, compared to a national average of around 10%.

Additionally, airport officials confirmed that IND is not among the airports where ICE agents will be assigned to assist TSA operations at this time.

Ongoing Coordination

The Indianapolis Airport Authority said it remains in close communication with TSA partners to ensure smooth operations and minimize disruptions for travelers.

With increased crowds expected throughout the spring break window, airport officials emphasize planning ahead, arriving early, and allowing extra time for parking and security screening.
