The Honor Roll Memorial on the east side of the Clinton County Courthouse is a labor of love for Veteran Service Officer Joe Root. A Marine Corps veteran who served during the Vietnam War, Root designed the memorial from the ground up 20 years ago. Today, it continues to take shape.
“We placed 18 new pavers in the memorial just this weekend,” Root says. “Anyone who has or had a loved one who served in the military is welcome to purchase one.”
The pavers cost 100 dollars. Red pavers are for veterans who survived their tour of duty. White pavers are for those who lost their lives. Money raised through the sale of the pavers pays for the upkeep of the memorial including new flags when they need replacing.
“I raised all the money for this project by myself selling pavers and benches,” Root adds. “I’m prouder of the memorial because it wasn’t paid for with tax dollars. It means a lot that the community stepped up to support this project.”
A retired Sheriff’s deputy and member of the City of Frankfort’s Utility Service Board, Root has been the county’s Veteran Service Officer since 2001. In his day job, he assists veterans and their families with benefits they may be eligible for due to their military service. Now 76-years old, Root says he feels an obligation to continue to serve.
“This project has been a mission of love,” Root says. “I could retire any time, but I’d probably just sit in my recliner and watch TV all day. I’d rather do what I can to honor Clinton County’s veterans, especially those that didn’t make it home.”
