Judy Sheets was officially sworn-in as the new Mayor of Frankfort on Saturday morning before a standing-room only crowd at Old Stoney.
Sheets, who was beginning her fourth term as Frankfort Clerk-Treasurer, was elected to the position in a three-way mayoral caucus against Board of Works member Kenny Estes and Frankfort City Councilman Eric Woods on February 22. She becomes Frankfort’s second female mayor. Mary Jane McMahon was Frankfort’s mayor from 1976 to 1983.
“I’m so excited,” said Sheets. “I’m anxious to get started and move forward. I just want the people of Frankfort to know that I’m going to serve them, that I do care about them, I love this community and I have a passion for it. My office door will always be open and I will serve them with honesty and integrity.”
As her first official duty, Sheets named current Frankfort City Councilwoman Megan Sheets and former Clinton County Sheriff and Clinton County Council member Mark Mitchell as new members of the Board of Works.
“When I first thought about being mayor, I found out that a council member can be on the Board of Works and I thought that would be the perfect set up,” Sheets said. “I think it would make good communication between the council and the Board of Works. Megan is very well versed in finances.
“Mark comes with me with a lot of leadership skills, public safety and I just thoought he would be a good fit,” continued Sheets. “I’ve always admired him and he’s been a good mentor to me. I think we’ve got a good team.”
There won’t be much time for celebration as the Board of Works have their first meeting at 5 p.m. Monday at Old Stoney. It is anticipated that Sheets will announce the new department heads for the City of Frankfort at that meeting.
Sheets doesn’t have far to go to get to her new office. She just has to move one door down from her old office as Clerk-Treasurer.
