Meredith Abbitt, 88, passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at his home in Whitestown. He was born on November 17, 1935, in Lebanon, a son of the late Chester and Mary (Hamilton) Abbitt.
On November 23, 1956, he was united in marriage to Louise May (Dye) Abbitt in Lebanon, she survives. They spent 67 loving years together.
Meredith attended Union Elementary School and received his diploma from Zionsville High School in 1953, having played on Zionsville’s only regional winning basketball team.
Meredith’s family had a farming operation that included 160 acers, plus another 110 acers that they farmed for their neighbors. Their focus was dairy herd, complimented by hogs, row crops, alfalfa, sheep, and beef cows. Their farm was sold in 2004 and is now the site of Zionsville Union Elementary School. His family still has another working farm in Union Township. Meredith was the fourth generation raised on the family farm and now his daughter Lillian is the fifth generation to live on the farm.
On March 5, 2009, at the 72nd Annual Breeders and Feeders banquet, in Boone County, Meredith received an achievement award, the Distinguished Agricultural Career Award. He was on the ASCS board for 17 years as a 4-H leaders assistant and was a lifetime member of Mts. Runn Baptist Church in Zionsville, where he served on the cemetery board. He was also a bus driver for Zionsville schools starting in 1987 and loved those kids dearly. In Meredith’s spare time he enjoyed going fishing and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Louise May (Dye) Abbitt of Whitestown; daughter, Lillian R. Easter of Whitestown; grandchildren, Abigail H. (Jacob) Pettit of Frankfort and Bryce C. Easter of Whitestown; great grandchild, Darci Pettit; brother, Chester Marion Abbitt; great nephews, Robert, and David (Sabine) Abbitt; and great niece, Jolan Abbitt.
In addition to his parents, Meredith was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Jess Brockway; and sister-in-law, Deloris Abbitt.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, December 8, 2023, at Mts. Runn Baptist Church, 250 South 775 East, Zionsville, IN 46077.
Funeral Services are planned for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 9, 2023, at Mts. Runn Baptist Church.
Meredith will be laid to rest at Mts. Runn Baptist Cemetery, 350 South 775 East, Zionsville, IN 46077. Myers Mortuary has been entrusted with his arrangements.
