Yesterday, March 10, Resolution SC0013 passed unanimously through the House of Representatives hearing committee to officially designate I-65 between mile markers 137 and 138 as the Deputy Jacob Pickett Memorial Mile.
Representative for District 41 Mark Genda commented about the resolution, which was designed to urge the Indiana Department of Transportation to rename the portion of I-65 between mile marker 137 and 138 in Boone County the “Deputy Jacob M. Pickett Memorial Mile.”
“Deputy Pickett dedicated his life to protecting our community and we will be forever grateful,” Genda said. “I’m honored to support this resolution as a way to remember and honor his legacy and sacrifice.”
Pickett started his law enforcement career at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office before transferring to the Tipton County Sheriff’s Office. He joined the Boone County Sheriff’s Office in 2015, serving as a taser instructor, K-9 team leader, K-9 handler and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police #110.
On March 2, 2018, Pickett was fatally shot during a pursuit with his K-9 partner, Brik, to apprehend three suspects who fled Lebanon Police serving a warrant.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to Senators Buchanan and Ford, as well as Representative Genda, for their unwavering support in making this tribute a reality,” the Sheriff’s Office released. “Deputy Pickett’s memory will forever remain a part of Boone County and the community he served.”
In remembrance of his sacrifice, his wife Jennifer established the Jacob Pickett Response Organization to assist other law enforcement families during tragic life events. To learn more, visit remembering626.org.
