Veterans are being urged to remain vigilant after reports surfaced of a text message scam falsely claiming to be from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
According to officials, several veterans recently reported receiving text messages stating they needed to “update their information.” The messages included a link directing recipients to what appeared to be a legitimate website where they were prompted to enter sensitive personal information.
Officials stress that the messages are fraudulent.
While the VA does send text messages to veterans regarding benefits updates, available resources and appointment reminders, it does not request sensitive personal information through unsolicited links. Veterans are encouraged to be cautious of any communication requesting personal details or demanding immediate payment.
Anyone who receives a suspicious text message or email claiming to be from the VA should report it immediately. Reports related to Veterans Health Administration matters can be made at (866) 842-4357. Scams involving VA benefits through the Veterans Benefits Administration should be reported to (833) 388-7233.
Non-VA related scams can be reported to the Federal Trade Commission at (877) 382-4357 or online at reportfraud.ftc.gov. All reporting lines are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Veterans are advised to block the sender, delete the message and avoid clicking on suspicious links. Officials emphasize that taking these precautions can help prevent identity theft and financial loss.
