BMV Reminds Newlyweds of Guidance on Name or Address Change Requirements

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) would like to prepare all the Hoosier newlyweds saying “I do” this summer wedding season of the requirements and documents needed for a name or address change on their driver’s license or ID card.

Before any business is done with the BMV, name-change applicants must first update their name with the Social Security Administration and wait at least one business day before completing their business with the BMV.

After completing the name change with the Social Security Administration, applicants must visit a BMV branch in person within 30 days of the name change. A name change or address change cannot be done online at myBMV.com or at a kiosk. Applicants are required to bring supporting documentation. Acceptable documents include:

  • Marriage License;
  • Divorce Decree;
  • Court Order approving the change of legal name; or
  • An original or certified copy of an amended birth certificate showing a change of name

For an address change, two original documents will be needed with the applicant’s name and Indiana residential address. Documents must contain a residential address not one with a post office box. A full list of acceptable documents can be found on the BMV’s Real ID checklist here on our website.

The BMV also encourages Hoosiers changing their name and/or address to update their driver’s license or ID card to a Real ID compliant credential if they have not already done so. A Real ID driver’s license or ID card will have a star in the top right corner. Non-compliant licenses and IDs will read “NOT FOR REAL ID PURPOSES” at the top.

These stipulations will apply to anyone who would like to change their name or address on their Indiana driver’s license or ID card.
