Rossville’s eighth-grade students recently traveled to the Indianapolis Zoo for an educational field trip focused on science, conservation, and environmental awareness.
The trip allowed students to connect classroom lessons to real-world experiences as they explored animal habitats, conservation programs, and interactive exhibits throughout the Zoo. Students observed a variety of animals and learned about the important role zoos play in protecting endangered species and preserving wildlife habitats.
One of the highlights of the trip was the Oceans exhibit, where students viewed marine life and watched dolphins through the Zoo’s underwater viewing area. Students also attended the Dolphin Presentation, which focused on dolphin behavior, marine ecosystems, and conservation efforts to protect oceans and waterways.
Rossville teacher Chris Landis said the experience helped students see how science is used in everyday life.
“Field trips like this give students the chance to see science in action,” Landis said. “The Indianapolis Zoo does an outstanding job helping students understand the importance of conservation, animal care, and environmental responsibility while making learning engaging and memorable.”
In addition to exploring exhibits, students learned about careers related to veterinary science, zoology, and environmental research. Teachers said the trip supported classroom instruction while encouraging students’ curiosity, critical thinking, and collaboration.
School officials noted that experiences outside the classroom help students better understand academic concepts while also creating opportunities for personal growth and teamwork.
For many students, the dolphin presentation and close-up views of the animals were among the most memorable parts of the day. Teachers also said the trip gave students a chance to strengthen friendships and create lasting memories as they prepare to begin high school next year.
Rossville Middle School expressed appreciation to the teachers, staff members, parent volunteers, and bus drivers who helped make the trip safe, educational, and enjoyable for all students.
