The Indiana State Police released information regarding an interstate shooting in the Indianapolis area on July 3 that resulted in an investigation in the cause of the incident, which was ruled as “road rage.”
On July 3 around 2:15 p.m., Hancock County 911 dispatchers reportedly received reports of shots being fired on Interstate 70 from a moving vehicle aimed at a semi tractor-trailer traveling on the interstate near the 101-mile marker.
The Indiana State Police stated that the information was immediately relayed to two troopers in the area who moved into position to intercept the suspect vehicle. The two troopers reportedly located vehicle west of Mt. Comfort Road and conducted a traffic stop where the driver was reportedly taken into custody, and a handgun was located within the vehicle. The driver, who was later identified at Gregory Davis, 22, of Indianapolis was identified as the sole occupant of the vehicle.
One detective reportedly met with the victim, a semi driver, who was not injured, but the detective located damage consistent with gunshot holes in the passenger side of the semi.
The initial findings led to the detectives speaking with a suspect, which led the detectives to rule that the incident was a “road rage” encounter, resulting in Davis being arrested for the shooting and transported to the Hancock County Jail, police report.
The Indiana State Police released information regarding the statistics behind “road rage” and interstate shootings within the past two years, stating that the incident marked the 40th incident of gunfire on the Indianapolis area interstates this year, which compares with last year’s total number of investigated interstate shootings in the Indianapolis District, which totaled 55 shootings for 2023.
“Anyone who witnesses any type of road rage or becomes involved is encouraged to call 911 immediately,” the department released. “Information provided by witnesses is inherently valuable in these investigations.”
According to the department, the arrest was based upon probably cause of a crime, but the department issued a reminder that all crimes mentioned are alleged and all suspects are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court. The investigation is currently ongoing, and no further information has been released as of Friday, July 5 at 3 p.m.
