Sheridan First Responders, Students & Faculty Receive Honors For Their Lifesaving Efforts In March

Sheridan first responders, students and school faculty were honored on Friday evening prior to the football showdown for their efforts to save a life in March.

On the evening of March 11, a basketball event was occurring at Sheridan High School, and the Sheridan Fire Department was dispatched to the school on reports of a possible broken ankle. While enroute to the school, EMS personnel were advised of a second patient in active sudden cardiac arrest.

Upon, arrival, EMS personnel immediately addressed the patient experiencing cardiac arrest, administering CPR and utilizing an AED to save the patient’s life.

The first responders, students and staff were honored with the State of Indiana Lifesaver Award.

Abby, a senior at Sheridan High School, was honored with the award for her quick actions in retrieving the athletic director during the sudden cardiac arrest.

Aaron Bell, a spectator at the event and the Division Chief and paramedic with the Pike Township Fire Department, also received the award for his efforts during the event.

Sheridan Police Department Patrolman Kevin Garrison and Patrolman Bob Shock also received the award. Garrison assisted with CPR for the cardiac arrest patient, and Shock responded while off duty to tend to the patient with the broken ankle.

Sheridan Fire Department EMT Captain Brian Harwood, Paramedic Darren Study, EMT Steven Weir and Paramedic Michael Carr were also honored for their action during the incident.

A plaque of commendation was presented to all of the Sheridan High School faculty and staff.
