Gov. Braun Announces BMV to Begin Offering Driver’s Licenses to Teens on their 16th Birthday

Governor Mike Braun is delivering a commonsense change for Hoosier families by allowing new drivers to obtain an Indiana driver’s license on their 16th birthday beginning July 1, 2026. As part of House Enrolled Act 1200, signed by Governor Braun on March 12, the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is now authorized to issue driver’s licenses at age 16, lowering the previous minimum age of 16 years and 90 days.

“Getting a driver’s license is an important milestone for young Hoosiers and their families,” said Governor Mike Braun. “This commonsense change gives families more flexibility while maintaining the strong safety standards and training requirements that help keep Indiana roads safe.”

“Earning a driver’s license is a rite of passage at any age,” said Commissioner Kevin Garvey. “We hope these new drivers spend a lifetime making safe and smart decisions on Hoosier roads.”

Requirements to obtain a license have not changed. To obtain a driver’s license at 16, new drivers must still complete all of the following requirements:

Pass the knowledge (written) test and hold an Indiana Learner’s Permit for 180 days
Successful completion of a Driver’s Education Program
Present a signed Log of Supervised Driving
Pass a vision screening test
Pass a driving test (driving tests may be completed with driver education providers)
Additionally, a parent, legal guardian, or other adult must be willing to assume the obligations imposed by signing an agreement of financial liability. Adults signing the agreement of financial liability must present documents of identification proving identity and age.

HEA1200 also allows 16-year-olds to obtain a motorcycle endorsement if they meet the requirements.
