Daniel Lee Haynes, 75, passed into eternity on September 10, 2023, surrounded by family. He was born February 26, 1948, to Otis M. Haynes and Ruth Pauline (Reinert) Haynes and was the oldest of four children. His three siblings survive: Pauline Kurtz (Bud), Sandra Rollins (Kevin), and Timothy M. Haynes (Penny).
Dan graduated from Avon High School in 1966 and immediately joined the United States Air Force where he flew missions during the Vietnam era as a technician and received two distinguished flying metals. On September 27, 1969, he was united in marriage to Gwendolyn Boyles in Fairbanks, Alaska; she was the daughter of the late Winfred and Ruth Ellen Spurlock Boyles.
Dan and Gwen were married 53 years, and she preceded him in death on November 24, 2022. They were blessed with one son, Timothy Haynes, daughter-in-law, Shannon, and grandson, Otis W. Haynes who live in Dubuque, Iowa. He is also survived by brother-in-law, Jerry (Tracy) Boyles of Kirklin, along with several nieces and nephews, and over 40 great nieces and nephews.
Dan grew up a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Plainfield, Indiana and fondly remembered his confirmation classes with Pastor Paul Kretzmann who organized the youth in their Walther League activities. His confirmation verse was from Revelation. “Be thou faithful unto death and I will give you the crown of life.”
Dan worked for Honeywell after eight years in the Air Force, and later started his own electrical business, The Bass Corporation. He dearly loved music, art, and fishing, often bragging about the ones that “got away.” He grew up fishing the Tippecanoe River with his grandfather, Herbert Reinert, and in his retirement, Dan established the “Art Bank,” on Mass Avenue for young aspiring artists. More than anything, Dan loved his family and could talk for hours about his son Tim, grandson, Otis, and daughter-in-law, Shannon.
Visitation is planned from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 North Lebanon Street, in Lebanon, Indiana. Funeral Services with Military Rites will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 15 at the funeral home. Interment will follow services at Browns Wonder Cemetery in Lebanon. Family and friends are invited for a meal (Grace Food Truck) at Lebanon Memorial Park in the memorial shelter from 12:00-2:00. Gifts of remembrance may be directed to the charity of the donor’s choice.
